Our 13 day Taste of Northern Laos tour takes clients off the beaten tracks of mass tourism and into the untamed northern region of Laos. On your journey you will discover and explore many sites including waterfalls, pristine natural environments, sacred caves, unexplained mysteries, and enjoy river cruising, an eco-lodge, UNESCO Heritage Sites, and welcoming, friendly minority groups.

Enjoy trekking through minority villages, and an ancient kingdoms’ capital before resting overnight in an eco-lodge. Visit villages and see the peoples lifestyles, their differences and similarities, enjoy a guided tour in Luang Prabang and its’ sites, explore some revered caves, a still unexplained mystery in Xieng Khoang, before finally reaching Vientiane, the country’s capital for a guided city tour, and the tours end.

Itinerary in detail

 

Day 1: Arrival - Vientiane - FLY - Luang Nam Tha


  • Enjoy some free time before the flight to Luang Nam Tha
  • Welcomed by our guide and transferred to your hotel
  • Overnight at hotel in Luang Nam Tha including breakfast

 

Day 2: Luang Nam Tha - Muang sing - Akha Ecolodge - Trekking


Muang Sinh

  • Depart by road to Muang Sing, the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Lu
  • Meet the ethnic people, mainly Thai Dam, Thai Lu, H’mong Yao-Mien, Akha, Shan, and Yunnan’s
  • Overnight in Akha lodge including breakfast

 

 

 

 

Day 3: Akha Ecolodge - Trekking

  • Discover Akha villages
  • Start trekking on forest trails, through villages
  • Witness the local techniques used to spin cotton, plant rice, and gather vegetables
  • Experience a traditional massage to ease those tired muscles
  • Overnight in Akha lodge including breakfast

 

 

 

Day 4: Akha Ecolodge - Trekking - Muang Sing

  • Spend some time at the local market
  • Discover all the herbs and spice that perfume and flavor the Laotian kitchen
  • Trek and visit a village of weavers close by

Day 5: Muang Sing - Oudomxay - Muang La

  • Take the road to Oudomxay populated by ethnic groups
  • Pass through the villages of Ban Na Teui, Namor and Ban Tawan, populated by the Hui Lao, Mien Yao, Lanten and H’mong
  • Experience the difference in their traditional dress and housing types
  • Transfer to Muang La Resort
  • Overnight in Muang La Resort including breakfast

 

 

Day 6: Muang La - Nong khiaw 


Nam Ngum

  • Discover Hmong and Ikhos villages; two typical Laotian ethnic communities.
  • Visit a beautiful, isolated Ikhos village, whose original inhabitants came from Yunnan Province in China and also from Tibet
  • Continue to the Hmong village of Ban Tauser
  • Return by road to Muang Khua located on the Nam Ou River
  • Head down the river by boat to return to Muang Ngoy
  • During the cruise pass through splendid scenery of karst landscapes and unspoilt nature
  • Upon arrival in Muang Ngoy discover a sacred Buddhist temple and shrine
  • Arrive in Nong Khiaw late in the afternoon
  • Overnight in Nong Khiaw including breakfast


Day 7: Nong Khiaw - Luang Prabang

  • From Nong Khiawi, travel in the traditional wooden boat to two sacred caves of Pak Ou housing thousands of Buddha statues
  • Have a magnificent view of the area where the tributary Nam Ou River mixes its transparent waters with those of the murky dark waters of the Mekong
  • Stop at the village of Ban Xang Hai
  • See the distillation of rice wine made in the traditional ways by the women
  • Overnight at hotel in Luang Prabang including breakfast

 

 

Day 8: Luang Prabang

A designated UNESCO Heritage City Site.

  • Early rise to witness the monks collecting alms
  • Visit some small morning markets, selling strange goods
  • Discover the local cuisine
  • Return to the hotel for breakfast

Then by tuk-tuk we continue our tour of the ancient capital:

  • Discover the beautiful Wat Xieng Thong, the royal Funeral Chariot and the reclining Buddha sanctuary
  • The oldest temple in Luang Prabang, and houses gold statues of Buddha
  • Find the That Makmo stone stupa
  • Vat Ahman, dedicated to ancestors of Laos
  • Explore the National Museum
  • See the richly decorated temple, Wat Mai
  • Stroll through the Darat market
  • Visit the nightly H’mong market
  • Enjoy a dance spectacle and welcoming ceremony
  • Overnight at a hotel in Luang Prabang including breakfast

 

Day 9: Luang Prabang - Khuang Sy waterfall - Luang Prabang

  • Depart for the beautiful Khuang Sy Waterfalls
  • Past traditional houses and lovely nature places
  • Discover the falls, nestled in lush vegetation
  • Relax and swim in the clear, blue pools of water there
  • Visit several villages, including a weaving and Saa paper producing one
  • See the Ock Pop Tok textile gallery
  • Stroll through the H’mong night market
  • Overnight at a hotel in Luang Prabang including breakfast

 

Day 10: Luang Prabang - Xieng Khoang - Plain of jars

  • Begin with a drive to the province of Xieng Khuang
  • Explore the “Plain of Jars” (site 1)
  • Discover massive sandstone jars weighing as much as 6 tonnes, scattered over a dozen separate sites
  • The origin of these jars is still unknown and further future excavations hope to answer this question
  • Attend villages of ethnic H’mong and Thai Phuan Dam people
  • Overnight at hotel in Phonsavan including breakfast

 

 

Day 11: Xieng Khuang - Muang Khoun - Vientiane

  • Visit the local market in Phonsavan
  • Take the road again to Vientiane
  • Stop in Muang Khoun to break the journey on the way
  • Overnight at hotel in Vientiane including breakfast.

 

 

 

Day 12: Vientiane


VientianeVientiane - City Tour by tuk-tuk:

  • Discover Vat Sisaket, built in 1818
  • Then Phraken Ho, the former royal chapel, the power base of the Kingdom of LaneXang
  • See Patouxay, a large monument built to commemorate the Lao people who died in pre-Revolutionary wars
  • The large golden stupa of That Luang, founded in 1566 and is said to contain a hair of Buddha
  • Explore the temple Wat Si Muang, the most visited temple in Vientiane, considered the seat of the guardian spirit of the city
  • Relax with a steam bath and massage
  • Enjoy free time for personal investigations
  • Enjoy dinner with a folk dance show
  • Overnight at a hotel in Vientiane including breakfast.

 

Day 13: Vientiane - Departure


  • Free time until transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
