Formalite Visa tourisme

Visa to Myanmar

All nationalities require a visa to enter Myanmar, to qualify for one your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival. A visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue, (visas allow for a maximum of 28 days stay) but don’t leave it too late as some embassies and consulates can take over 2weeks to process an application. As there are some small differences between Myanmar embassies it is best to check requirements with your nearest embassy.

No extensions are available (at time of writing), but sometimes when people have overstayed they, up to one week, have been “fined” $3 per day plus $3 registration fee by airport Immigration officials. any fines must be paid in US Dollars, so if you do overstay be prepared and have the exact money ready as change from large bills just doesn’t happen.

On the first of June 2012 the Myanmar government implemented a “Visa on Arrival” program, paving the way for tourists and business visitors to gain easier access to the country. A 70 day business visa will cost US$50, while a 28 day tourist visa will be US$40. A 24hr transit visa will also be available for $20.

Border Crossings

Myanmar’s land borders are closed to tourists, except for three specific cases.

> To and From Mai Sai Thailand: North of Chiang Rai it is possible to cross the bridge to Tachileck. A 14 day entry permit, not a visa, will be issued at the border for 500 Thai Baht. This permit enables you to travel as far as Kentung, BUT NO FURTHER , even if you possess a regular tourist visa. Travelers with a permit may exit Myanmar here, or if they have a permit to do so from MTT (Myanmar Travels & Tours in Yangon.

> To and From Ranong Thailand: This exit is closed to outgoing tourists but it is possible (when open) to cross into Myanmar from Thailand for a “visa run”. Again restrictions apply with the permit you receive, but you must leave your passport with border officials.

> To and From Ruili, China: You can only enter or leave Myanmar by this crossing on a package tour, in both directions at a cost of approximately $200. You cannot go here on your own.

The information on the border crossings may change as recent historical events in Myanmar have caught the world by surprise. As democracy takes a fragile hold in Myanmar many constants have become quite fluid and wonderful changes are taking place everyday. It is best to make inquiries with relevant consular, embassy staff or travel agents to find out if any changes have occurred that may affect your travel plans.
